A STUDY ON THE INTRODUCTION, CULTIVATION OF LOTUS ROOTS IN WATERLOGGED LOWLAND IN XINXINGYUAN OF HUBEI PROVINCE

  • Two excellent varieties of lotus are introduced into the waterlogged lowland in Xinxingyuan, Huhei Province (from 1988 to 1989). The research results are shown in the following:1. The growth of the experimental lotus is very well. 2. The production and economic effects is satisfactory. The yield of lotus roots is 3137.5kg/mu in 1988 and 2750kg/mu in 1989. The economic effects of planting lotus is 2750—3137.5 Yuan/mu, which is 15—23 times higher than that of planting rice in the same conditions.3. It is not necessary to pump water for irrigation of lotus and the expenses is low, because the waterlogged lowland in Xinxingyuan has a shallow layer of water without drough4. Some important measures in cativation are also offered in this paper.
