THE ANATOMICAL IDENTIFICATION OF NORTHERN TWINFLOWER (LINNAEA BOREALIS L. CAPRIFOLIACEAE) IN CHANGBAI MOUNTAINS

  • In this paper, the anatomical identification of Linnaea borealis has been made. We presented the evidence that the plant has a good adaptaility to the environments in Changbai Mountains.Stem transvers show that the species can live in Changbai Mountains for many years. As one of the smallest bush plants in the world, it can resist the cold environment in Changbai Mountains, because it has special structures such as the special periderms, rays and pith. The cork in the thick periderms of roots and stems are made of big cube cells full of air. The cork cells play an important role in protecting the plant from heat. Many primary and secondary rays are observed in the secondary xylem. Each ray is made of one row parenchyma cells. The plant has bigger pith made of many bigger parenchyma's cells. The pith and ray cells can help the plant to store and transfuse the nutrient for growth.
