STUDIES ON THE SELECTION AND BREEDING OF FINE VARIETIES OF THE CHINESE GOOSEBERRY

  • The Chinese gooseberry (Actindia chinensis Planch var. chinensis) have been met witha great success in introduction and culture from the wild to cultivated types in Wuhan. The key in the process from the high mountain areas to low plains and hills is to supply plentiful water during the growth and development of the fruits. To improve the conditions of aeration and drainge in soil is a very important link for the normal growth of its roots. There are ten promise strains (or individuals) have been selected according to the standards (big fruits, good quality, high yield as well as fine exteriors). The single biggest fruit, e.g. Wuzhi 3, is 156g and the average is 90-110g in weights, Vc content reaches 250-300 mg/100g fresh fruits and the synthetic characteristics are very good.
