THE INTRODUCTION AND CULTIVATION OF LEUCAENA LEUCOCEPHALA CV. SALVADOR IN SANXIA RESERVOIR REGION

  • Leucaena leucocephala cv. Salvador is an important economical plant of Legume which can be used as forage, green manure, fuel and timber. Because it grows quickly and forms extensive root-system, it is the excellent woody plant used for water and soil conservation.The genus leadtree is mainly distributed in tropics and southern part of subtropics. The northern border of its cultivation region in China lies between Fuzhou and Guilin.In the years from 1983 to 1985 the L.leucocephala cv. Salvador was first introduced by the authors into some places in Sanxia Reservoir Region, which lies in 29°31′—31°40′N latitude.The results of the introduction and cultivation obviously shows that this variety can thrive, produce mature seeds and live through the winter in the valleys of the section from Fengjie to Chongqing.
