Experimental Warming on the Rice-Wheat Rotation Agroecosystem

  • Experimental warming under field conditions has been applied in studies on feedback between climate warming and ecosystems in recent years. From Dec 2007 to Nov 2009,a warming experiment using infrared heaters on a rice-wheat rotation agroecosystem was conducted at the Agricultural Water Irrigation Technology Station in the Qingpu district of Shanghai to study fluctuations in production and biomass changes in response to future climate warming in the Changjiang River Delta,China. With no changes in the current agricultural management, the aboveground biomass and production of rice with warming decreased by 3.47% and 5.84% and of winter wheat increased by 6.55% and 5.19%,respectively,in the first year. The aboveground biomass and production of rice decreased by 19.53% and 22.57% and of winter-wheat increased by 6.27% and 5.00%,respectively,in the second year. However, the belowground biomass of rice increased by 8.69% in the growing season from Jun to Nov,2009.In the third year, the aboveground biomass and the production of winter-wheat increased by 6.24% and 5.17%,and the belowground biomass increased by 43.73%.In addition, the main traits of the winter wheat were affected significantly by experimental warming, but changes in the traits of rice were not significant.
