Breeding and Appraisal of New Sweetpotato Cultivar ‘Xushu 32’ with High Quality

  • A new high-quality sweetpotato cultivar ‘Xushu 32’ was derived from ‘Xushu 55-2’ and ‘Beniazuma’ parental material with very different genetic backgrounds and good quality characteristics by natural sexual breeding. It was approved by the Henan Provincial Crop Varieties Appraisal Committee in 2015. We studied the agronomic, production, disease resistance and quality characteristics of ‘Xushu 32’. Results showed that ‘Xushu 32’ had a short stem, strong sprout ability, strong storage ability, good taste, resistance to black rot, and medium resistance to stem nematodes and root rot. Fresh storage root yield of ‘Xushu 32’ was equivalent to that of ‘Xushu 22’. Dry storage root yield and starch yield were 15.24% and 18.99% higher, respectively, than that of ‘Xushu 22’. Main root nutrients were higher than that of ‘Xushu 18’. Its starch peak viscosity (PKV) and breakdown viscosity (BDV) were 6.52% and 12.40% higher, respectively, than that of ‘Xushu 18’. Starch granule distribution was different among surface area, volume, and number frequency, with the former two distributed in a triple peak pattern and the latter in a single peak pattern. The average granule diameters of ‘Xushu 32’ in the three granule distributions mentioned above were 12.22%, 13.18%, and 2.22% lower, respectively, than that of ‘Xushu 18’. In brief, ‘Xushu 32’ is a good sweetpotato cultivar for table use with excellent properties and good quality characteristics, which will satisfy market requirements and improve sweetpotato varieties.
